Welcoming us into her backyard, Shelby gave us the rundown of her favourite Veradek planters and explained her love for corten steel. She is a big fan of clean, modern horizontal lines, and loves how the rectangular shapes make them so easy to plant and look professional. They can be customized, you can plant rows, create privacy screens or a divider between living spaces. She believes the possibilities are endless.

where trendy meets timeless

She knows corten is trendy right now, but believes it’s a classic and ageless look, that's not going anywhere. “It’s the strongest, most durable metal, once it oxidizes and it’s never changing after that. It’s ageless.” For wintertime, it’s her go-to planter - there are no signs of aging over the coldest months, and its rich warm colour adds beautifully to natural landscapes. It compliments wood and stone, all the natural elements, serving as a great base for fall and winter planting.

making the most of winter

“Winter interest is so important,” Shelby explains. “When it’s grey and dreary out there, sometimes you just need a little pick-me-up when you look out the window.” She believes winter arrangements are the most rewarding – this is where she gets to be creative and experiment with all evergreen varieties. Every year she likes to change it up, but always follows a few basic principles.

keeping it simple

“When getting started, simplicity is the key. Pick around three types of foliage, it’s more than enough to work with and make a statement. She loves pulling different kinds of cedar, evergreens, local foliage and mixing all the textures, colours and natural elements. The general principle is to add branches for height to create an interesting focal point. This will also serve as the base you can build around. Fill in the gaps all around it as much as possible to make it lush and interesting to look at from all angles. In the end, you’ll have a beautiful statement piece that will last all season long. Take a look below at Shelby's DIY and create your own winter corten steel arrangements.
